Gold Matters
Since 2018, Nuku Studio has been part of the “Gold Matters” Project.
An international team of researchers and artists examined how social transformations towards sustainable mining futures are possible.
The concluding photography exhibition features Nii Obodai’s photo project “Big Dreams, Life Built on Gold”. It captures an intimate portrait of the mining community in Kejetia (Gbane in the Upper East region of Ghana).
In Nii’s words: “Gold mining is centuries old in northeast Ghana, it is nothing new... for me the work (photography) is more than trying to explain to people today, it is actually for the generations that are not yet born.”
The exhibition is on display at Nuku Studio’s Center for Photographic Research and Practice in Tamale from 18 July until 31 October 2022.
The Gold Matters project is a collaboration between; the Nordic Africa Institute Sweden; University of Leiden, The Netherlands; Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil; Universidade de São Paulo, Centre for Responsible Mining, Brazil; Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Uganda; Environmental Women for Action in Development, Uganda; Institute for Social Research in Africa, Burkina Faso; University of Reading, United Kingdom; University of Hamburg, Germany; and artists Christophe Sawadogo, Burkina Faso and Nii Obodai, Nuku Studio, Ghana.
